about

About a year ago, I created a silly song with my friend Neil about curating a chill environment – including things we probably all consider basic: a couch, food, a hot bath. The song sat dormant for a while on my hard drive and upon rediscovering it recently and in looking at it through the lens of the current pandemic - it has made me realize how much we can unconsciously take for granted. The sad reality is that, according to a 2017 report by Coalition for the Homeless, more than 60,000 men, women and children sleep in shelters every night in NYC. Due to extreme income inequality and lack of affordable housing, New York City pushes those at the lowest end of the income spectrum out of the housing market. Everyone should be able to have shelter, a bed, access to food and clean water - these are basic physiological needs. I sincerely hope everyone has a comfortable place to chill during this time of quarantining, but to consider the people that are not as fortunate, and as such, much more at risk of contracting the virus.

Fortunately, there are a number of organizations providing shelter and resources, coordinating outreach efforts, and pushing for government policy to alleviate the crisis. So, what started off as yet another goofy song about drinking and eating snacks on the couch has spawned this call to action: Please consider donating to or (when it's safe to) volunteering with one of the many great organizations helping the homeless in NYC. I've made it one step easier for you to donate: all sales of this song will go to the Ali Forney Center, whose mission is to protect LGBTQ youths from the harms of homelessness and empower them with the tools needed to live independently. www.aliforneycenter.org I'm not fooling myself to think that this tiny gesture is going to have any large impact, but as lots of folks hole up at home to minimize the impact of Covid-19, I can't help but wonder about those that do not have such a space to call their own and what we can do to help those less fortunate in the most trying times.
